What you Should and Should Not Store in Cloud Storage
So you have your cloud set up, what do you put on it? The cloud is versatile and can store just about anything. However, just because you can store something, doesn’t mean you should. There are certain documents and applications that exist well in the cloud while others should stay far away from it.
What to Store in Cloud Storage
Cloud storage is secure and easily accessible making it an excellent platform to store the majority of your data. However, you may want to consider whether to store files on a public or private cloud. Here is a general list of items to move to cloud storage:
- Photos or video
- To-do lists
- Projects or group documents
- Blog posts
- Webpage hosting
- Business documents
Dropbox provides you with plenty of apps that make it an excellent tool to host webpages or blogs on. It is also a great way to share documents with multiple people or computers. Google Drive is another public cloud that is useful for sharing files as well as storing your photos or even to-do lists.
Business documents are trickier as some files are safer in a private cloud. Your financial data should be kept on a private server but a payroll application could be stored on a public cloud. And don’t forget, you can always store your photos or other files on a private cloud if it suits your needs better.
What Not to Store in The Cloud
Even though the cloud is incredibly secure and you can take steps to protect your data like encryption, a data breach is always possible. Some documents are far too sensitive to entrust on the cloud. Beyond security issues, certain applications will not work well with a cloud system.
Highly regulated documents like health records or medical research that must go to the FDA may not be the best documents to keep on the cloud. Applications that are necessary for your day to day work flow should also be stored outside of the cloud just in case a server goes down. This may seem obvious but keeping illegal or pirated data on a cloud is not a good idea either.
So you see, you can trust the cloud to securely hold most of your data. Though a hack is always possible no matter what storage method you use, you can sleep easy at night knowing you’ve placed the proper documents in the cloud.
